How to show all my recent downloads in Google Chrome

Recent downloads in Google Chrome explained…

If you are like me, you are doing 10 things at one time in your job or at home.  I am a huge multi-tasker!  I also download many things from the internet with Google Chrome.  I seem to be constantly doing that.  What about you?

There are so many times that I say to myself…I wish I could  remember what I downloaded two days prior.   So, it made me think to write a post on how to show all my recent downloads in Google Chrome.  If you haven’t noticed from some of my other posts, I am a huge fan of Google Chrome.  Not only from a security standpoint but also from an ease of use and quickness point of view.

The way that Google Chromes displays your recent downloads is really nice and simple.  Having worked in Information Technology for over 20 years, I can say that it is always GREAT when a software manufacturer makes something easy to do.  That is certainly what Google has done with recent downloads AND it sorts them by date.  So if you remember, “I know that I downloaded that piece of software on Monday”, you can go to the recent downloads section and check it by date.

Let’s get to it….

1.  Open Google Chrome

2.  Click on the Wrench in the top right hand corner of Google Chrome

3.  Click on Downloads

4.  Now you will be shown all your recent downloads in Chrome sorted by date

That’s it.

I told you it was simple.  :-)

Hope this helps someone.

Happy computing!

Don't warn me before closing multiple tabs in Firefox 12

If you are like me, when you are surfing the internet, you probably have about 6 or 7 tabs open at the top of your browser screen viewing 6 0r 7 different website URL’s.  Then….I want to exit out of Firefox and have to tell my workstation don’t warn me before closing multiple tabs by clicking the dialog box that comes up.

I know there are some that say that they really like this precautionary measure about closing multiple tabs. Personally, I don’t like seeing the multiple tabs warning.  I do love having the multiple tabs at the top though AND I have three monitors to boot using the Matrox Triple Head2go device (which by the way is easy to setup and GREAT).  Can you say multi-tasking.  You are probably saying, what geek is not like this…ha.

Regardless if you like to close all tabs without a warning or not…here is how you do it.  Leave me a comment on what your preference is on this topic.  I would love to know.

1.  Open the Firefox internet browser  (You can download the newest version from here)

2.  Click on Tools (if you don’t have the menu bar, just click on the Firefox amber colored button in the top left corner and click Options and Menu Bar or you can watch my video at

http://youtu.be/KzrxiMU7_-I

be sure to  look around time frame 1:33)

3.  Click on Options

4.  Click on the Tabs Tab

5.  Click Warn me when closing multiple tabs

6.  Click OK

For a video of the above tip…..

http://youtu.be/M7ZoUPhG414

There you have it.  Simple as that.  Let’s go set our preferences.

You can also see here how to tell Firefox that you do not want to be tracked.  Just thought I would throw that one in for your viewing pleasure.

Happy computing!

Just thought I would show you an awesome Computer movie about Kevin Mitnick

How to preview emails in Outlook 2010 with the Reading Pane

I really like to use the reading pane in Outlook 2010 to preview received emails prior to opening them. I think this option changed in Outlook 2007. I always try to teach new users of Outlook 2010 to use this option. Hopefully it helps them and will help you from accidentally clicking on a malicious link inside a phishing attempt email.

I can remember not that long ago, there was the thought not to use the reading pane as a preview to newly received email. There were a few drive by malware and virus threats that infected computers just by previewing the infected email. I feel that the new anti-virus programs out today will stop the vast majority of these threats. Just make sure that you have your anti-virus application is active on your computer AND up to date. I use an anti-virus program called ESET. What a fabulous application. Not only is it effective, but it does not slow my system down like some other well known applications.

Ok, how do you enable the Reading Pane in Outlook 2010?

1. Open Outlook 2010
2. Click on the View Tab at the top of the screen

3. Click the down arrow on the icon button labeled Reading Pane. You have the option to show the Reading Pane on the Right, Bottom or turn it off.

4. You also have a couple more options as shown below. What you see below is how I have my personal settings.

Pretty straightforward way to setup your Reading pane in Outlook 2010.

Hope this helps someone!

Happy computing!

Steve Jobs, the lost interview trailer+ → tumblr.thedailywh.at

thedailywhat:

Movie Trailer of the Day: Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview is a new documentary whose footage was recorded in 1995, thought long-gone, and recently unearthed on a forgotten VHS tape in a garage. The footage has been spruced up and “placed in context,” and will get a limited theatrical release May 11 ahead before the DVD version becomes available this summer.

The interview was recorded at a curious time in Jobs’ career, 10 years after he’d left Apple and about a year before he would be back at the helm. Over the course of the hour-long interview, Jobs speaks candidly about the early days of his career, his forced departure from Apple, and his vision for the future of tech.

Eye Implants → wildcat2030.tumblr.com

wildcat2030:

Two British men who have been totally blind for many years have had part of their vision restored after surgery to fit pioneering eye implants. They are able to perceive light and even some shapes from the devices which were fitted behind the retina. The men are part of a clinical trial carried out at the Oxford Eye Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London. Professor Robert MacLaren and Mr Tim Jackson are leading the trial. The two patients, Chris James and Robin Millar, lost their vision due to a condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, where the photoreceptor cells at the back of the eye gradually cease to function. The wafer-thin, 3mm square microelectronic chip has 1,500 light-sensitive pixels which take over the function of the photoreceptor rods and cones. The surgery involves placing it behind the retina from where a fine cable runs to a control unit under the skin behind the ear. (via BBC News - Two blind British men have electronic retinas fitted)

How to automatically save drafts of emails in Outlook 2010 → pctips4all.com

I know that there are times while writing an email, you may get a phone call or get called away to a meeting right in the middle of writing of the email.  Then Murphy’s Law takes over and the power goes off of someone turns off your computer and then you lose your email that you have been diligently working on for some time.  This really stinks but I am sure this has happens to most of us.  There is good news though…..

Just like in Microsoft Word, you can setup an auto save in Microsoft Outlook 2010.  After this is setup, it will automatically save a draft every XX minutes.  Here is how you can set this up:

  • Start Microsoft Outlook
  • Click File
  • Click Options
  • Click Mail on the left hand side
  • Scroll down to the Save Messages section
  • Check the box labeled Automatically save items that have not been sent after this many minutes
  • Choose the number of minutes that you want Outlook to automatically save
  • Click OK

How to tell if someone has been logging into your Facebook other than you → pctips4all.com

Social media has become an intregal part of our everyday lives.  Facebook is probably the most prevelant these days.  If you stopped 10 people on the street today and asked them about Facebook, more than likely, all 10 would know about Facebook.  Ages from 10 to 80 would probably know about this social media application and 8 would probably have an account with Facebook.

While this application is so popular world wide and it is a great way to keep up with family, friends and businesses, it is also a hideout for others trying to manipulate it and use it for malicious purposes.  It seems with every good thing that is brought about for something good, there are those that want to use it to prey on others.

I would like to show you an easy way to see if others have gained access to your Facebook account unknowingly to you and how to end their activity with your account.  It is important that we stay on top of Facebook security measures.  Facebook security settings are easy to access.

Here is how to check to see if your Facebook has been hacked:

How to add a favorite website shortcut to your desktop with Internet Explorer 9 → pctips4all.com

If you are like me, there are certain websites that you use every day.  Rather than going to Internet Explorer 9 and then typing in the URL or clicking on your favorites and finding that site, there is a faster way to access the site.  You can put a website link directly on your desktop as an icon.  The following will show you how to do this:

  • Go to your favorite website in Internet Explorer 9
  • In your Internet Explorer screen, click on File
  • Click on Send
  • Click on Shortcut to Desktop

That’s it…now you have a shortcut link to your website on your desktop.
